Genius loci |
|||
the prevailing character or atmosphere of a place. ORIGIN early 17th cent.: Latin, literally ‘spirit of the place.’ This is the record of a walk along the Thames from Charing Cross westwards to Hammersmith. Much of the route along the north shore is dominated by newly constructed apartment blocks lacking architectural merit, historical connection or any apparent sense of community. It was as though the multiple developments had drained the very soul from the area. |
